ok.  I'm looking for help here.  Being that there is an incompatibility
between this specific codec's data format and the available fields,
would adding another field be out of the question?  If so, I think I'll
just have to use integers only and consider it less-than-ideal, but
better than the current alternative of only being able to specify bitrate.
