[Ffmpeg-devel] Encoding images

Hi all,
      I am doing a project,  in which i need to edit(copy,merge 2 clips)videos. I want to use the ffmpeg API to do this. Can anyone tell me whether it is possible with ffmpeg. Also, I have series of ppm images which i want to encode into an avi file, how can i do that using avcodec_encode_video() function. Any help would be appreciated.
