Okay, maybe I've been too quick to blame GCC this time. What made me think it was gcc's falt is this bugzilla entry about some of ffmpeg's rountine, which can't be compiled without optimizations:

Just because code is syntactically "valid" GNU C doesn't mean gcc can always compile it.
