Imho it worst to force the user to install xawtv than to reimplement 
some simple and clean ioctl. It's like disabling audio volume on media 
players forcing user to install aumix just for the fear of code duplication.
Btw I use frequently video4linux too and I find absolutly not 
user-friendly neither usable applications lacking input or channel 
switching. I would prefer code duplication on complexity for user 
oriented application, which is the case of ffmpeg.
