One practical problem for official use of git or Mercurial in the
current setup are the svn externals between MPlayer and FFmpeg. Features
to directly support using parts of other projects are being developed
for git, but that "subproject" support is not ready yet. Currently you
have to use some level of hackishness in setting up the repository. I
suppose a FFmpeg repository without externals could be created (if you
move libswscale to be part of FFmpeg), but that still leaves
implementing some workaround for MPlayer.
