-b looks buggy, as it produces no background (at least for me).

I tried this command:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -vhook './drawtext.dll -b
-f /cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/Fonts/Verdana.ttf
-x 50 -y 100 -t Hola -c #00FF00 -C #00FFFF -s 36' -sameq output.avi

If I recall correctly, during last summer there were a number of proposed
patches to drawtext.c, but not all them ended up being applied.

You may search the ffmpeg-devel list for "drawtext".
