Here's a patch that applies cleanly to the current tree (the recent
cosmetic commit broke that patch). I didn't change the the new code to
make it blend in the Diego's style, but will eventually do it before
checking it in.

I'm back home now (all tanned!), so I shall test this patch thoroughly
in the coming days.
