One of the intended effects is to be able to go from the source tree to the
modified tree and back without problems, i.e. to be able to effectively
participate your acquired freedoms (as defined by FSF) on the software in
question. Without an exact patch that is not possible.
So yes, a patch (or modified source tree plus source/origin, which is
effectively the same thing minus a "diff -u" between the two) is required.
