Excuse-me, but is your parenthesized text supposed to imply that intra-frame
only is the same as lossless?

If so, you are mistaken. There is no implication between lossless and
intra-only: you can have lossy codecs with only intra-frames (MJPEG, DV),
and lossless codecs with a lot of P-frames and even B-frames (FLIC (does
anyone remember this?), H.264 with quantizer 0).
