Maybe QuickTime is an exception, but think VLC at least in the past
thought something was DV that wasn't (i.e. it has a higher
false-positive rate - it might of course have a higher false-negative
rate in addition). And libdv and many others basically accept anything
(which arguably is what let things get so bad).
