I don't have encoder input available, unfortunately. Would a blind
test comparing output of the various forms of the decoder _only_ be
ok? (It wouldn't be double blind because the test subject wouldn't
know which is which, but the interrogator = me would.)

I basically can't hear much of a difference between each version, so
I'd be an awful test subject anyway.
