His rights are back.  He promised not to commit stuff to other
people's files without approval.

OK, then let's do that.  As a first step, I'd like to get rid of some
of the threading library support baggage we're carrying.  Please
comment on the other thread.

We should also make sure to announce this change in a way that gets
noticed by distro packagers and others who might need to know.
