Well I think it would, if xine was still kicking, that is. In general,
reusing an already-present feature of libavutil (which branch 1.2 was
already designed to use at lib level) would still be better than
reinventing it from scratch.

In the case of xine, libavformat is not used, as protocols and demuxers
are implemented from scratch, for what it's worth.
