I think the date should be present too, it is the only information that can
be parsed without any previous knowledge.

Extra information can be added in a separate chunk:
version gitrevisions-compatible (extra details)
compn: the date is the date of the latest commit, not the build date. A
three-years-old version will have a three-years-old latest commit.
