No, we don't "need to", we can. FFmpeg is not a validator tool.

You can avoid the multiplication by using av_calloc((2 * sizeof(int8_t)
+ sizeof(int16_t) + sizeof(uint32_t)) + sizeof(uint32_t),
dist->alphabet_size).
