At the moment I use the following:
    command='
    ffmpeg -y
           -async 1
           -f alsa
           -ac 1
           -i '"${MIC_WEBCAM}"'
           -acodec libmp3lame
           -ar 22050
           -b:a 128k
           -t 1 dummy.mp3'
    if ${command} 2>/dev/null ; then
        micToUse="${MIC_WEBCAM}"
    else
        micToUse="${MIC_INTERN}"
    fi
