Because the progressive formats are lower resolution, take  up too much 
bandwidth and aren't as efficient and flexible. The highest progressive 
resolution format has less resolution than the average HD display sold 
in the US today and the difference is very noticeable. The interlaced 
formats support telecine flags to send 24 fps progressive video (this 
works great with mplayer). Unfortunately 720p requires that 24 fps 
material be sent with three redundant frames for every five. These 
reasons are why in the US only two networks use 720p while every other 
network and HD cable channel uses 1080i.
