Because the progressive formats are lower resolution, take up too much
bandwidth and aren't as efficient and flexible. The highest progressive
resolution format has less resolution than the average HD display sold
in the US today and the difference is very noticeable. The interlaced
formats support telecine flags to send 24 fps progressive video (this
works great with mplayer). Unfortunately 720p requires that 24 fps
material be sent with three redundant frames for every five. These
reasons are why in the US only two networks use 720p while every other
network and HD cable channel uses 1080i.
