[MEncoder-users] lavc vs. native x264

hi,

i want to encode several videos to avi-files with h264/mp3. With  
mencoder you can encode whether
with libavcodec or with the x264-Codec. So my question is, were are  
the differences between those
two codecs? Is there a recommendation which codec is better to use?
I found out that libavcodec is a little bit faster than x264.
