I remember seeing several places in mplayer audio code that assume a
maximum of 6 channels; up to now I'd never seen more in the wild. Maybe
I'll be able to fix mplayer to handle more, though, at this point, I
don't know what the proper fix is. It would be nice to handle an
arbitrary number.

When I use faad on the dumpstream it downmixes to 6 channels, which I
can then downmix to 2 with:
mplayer stream.wav -af pan=2:1:0:0:1:1:0:0:1:0.5:0.5:1:1
Or, 'faad -d' downmixes to 2 channels.
The audio by itself sounds fine to me.
Out of curiosity, how were you able to determine that the audio track
has 8 channels?
