I'm beginning to understand what is confusing me.  My favorite editor
is XEmacs and I use its column number mode to see which column I am
on.  It starts counting at 0 instead of 1.  Mystery solved.  Sorry for
being such a stubborn pest.  Revised patch with 79 character
linebreaks coming up right now.
