I might prefer to say "the given file/URL" again, instead of simply
"it". I noticed this one when the previous version came through, as
well, but didn't comment because I couldn't think of any adequate way to
handle the problem. The actual issue is the lack of a (clear) antecedent
for "it"; as things stand, the apparent antecedent is "<append>", which
is not what is intended. The current form is better than the previous,
in that the desired antecedent (the specified file or URL) is actually
mentioned - but it still doesn't work quite right IMO, and I don't know
how to easily correct it without repetition of "the given file/URL",
which would sound awkward.

The same issue exists in the second part of this commit, of course.
