or -D_GNU_SOURCE

so to summarize one of the following is needed -D_ISOC99_SOURCE or 
-D_ISOC9X_SOURCE or -D_GNU_SOURCE

many of our Makefiles add -D_GNU_SOURCE, the one from libaf does not
