Except that it's useless, because either no autodetection is available
(so there would be nothing for --enable to do) or it is performed
automatically unless overridden (so --enable would be redundant).

And there are other people, including me, to whom it sounds considerably
*less* intuitive - for what that's worth.

There was a suggestion, towards the end of the last time this topic came
up, for an alternative naming scheme such that the meaning of --enable
did not change, and I seem to recall having found it acceptable - but it
never went anywhere, and at present the details escape me.
