I think we conclusively decided to assign blame on NetBSD's sh
and not tr ;-)

Ah excellent, coreutils just finished compiling, let's see...

tr: read error: Bad file descriptor

This with GNU tr and NetBSD sh, attempting to execute a small
test script I made, the end result is identical to using the NetBSD
tr :)

The bigger question is, WHY does this happen? Buggy sh? If so,
I'm going to write up a bugreport to NetBSD.
