Using "v2 only" would have problems too. Updating the license later
would be very hard or impossible even if everyone was OK with the
change. So far most relevant free software has been compatible with the
GPL v2, but it's likely that in the future there will be significant v3+
projects. Using "v2 only" would prevent using MPlayer with those.
