What version of awk is this?  What exactly is triggering the syntax
error?

I'd much rather fix the awk script to be more portable.  The "test" we
had in configure was useless anyway.  It probably chose GNU awk before
Solaris awk on your system.

Also, I'm rather sick of all these Solaris workarounds and very tempted
to just remove them.
