It is possible to force mplayer to use live555 if native thinks it can
receive the stream but actually can't (-demuxer 21).
And here is what Reimar had to say about this some time ago:
"well, in stream/stream.c, open_stream_full you could do something like
is done in libvo/video_out.c, init_best_video_out"

PS: Why doesn't nemesi configure doesn't fail if Netembryo isn't
installed? It doesn't work without it, or does it?
