Indeed, there are sane shells available on Solaris - why, the whole gnu 
userspace is available. But I would guess that the default sh is the same 
crap in new solaris, because of backward compatibility (which they have 
always strived for).

I am guessing again, but maybe it was to make mplayer compilable on Solaris 
out-of-the-box.
