I did not notice a compiler warning because of the linking command filling up 
the whole screen. Three whole screens, in fact. I wonder if it could be made 
less verbose with some configure switch or environment variable? It could 
look like the kernel build system output: "[C] filename" or "[LINK] 
filename".

Yes, I know about "make -s" :) It hides too much, IMO.
