That SSA/ASS subtitles do not work right with lavf is much more
important. Do not try to make lavf the default again until at least the
subtitle issues are resolved.

SSA/ASS not working right is a major issue. Any problems in the internal
demuxer affect much fewer files/people.

You can keep working on fixing the known problems even if the demuxer is
not the default one. Maybe it can be made the default again later; but
that you're working on fixing the issues is no argument to make it the
default _before_ you've actually fixed them.
