The one doesn't contradict the other, it could be using that.
Either way, MPlayer does not really care about the extension, except
in this case where it defaults to UTF-8 then.
See the code I just changed about the details.

Well, but not having a filter is rather annoying for someone who has subtitles
with that extension and wants to select them?
A better description might be "UTF-8 encoded subs" and *.utf, *.utf8 and
*.utf-8 as extensions.
