Try the following command line first and see if it's still jerky:

hdparm -c1 -d1 -u1 -k1 /dev/cdrom

You might also try playing with the readahead options and stuff...I
don't think those seem to work for me though.

(BTW, shouldn't something like this be in the DOCS? Or maybe it is
already...?)
