I am not completely convinced. I mean it did and still does link with

It does not anymore link with this version:

gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
GNU ld version 2.13.90.0.16 20021126 Debian GNU/Linux

and produces warnings in ld 2.12.90.<something> .....
