Do you remember configure2? I admit I only have vague
recollections, but I seem to remember that requirements were discussed on
the list, someone took the initiative to commit the script, it was hacked
on, and eventually got promoted to the new configure script. The cycle
does work sometimes.
Trust me, I *don't* have a lot of faith in the idealized version
of software engineering taught in academia, where everything is supposed
to be 100% designed before writing a single line of code and I've had
many experiences like yours in the Java environment. I hope we can agree
that we will work to redesign the major subsystems of MPlayer 1 by 1,
cosmetic issues aside.

I also sent an email with a brainstorm a few days before yours,
but I admit that yours was a little more complete in the way the rest of
the system viewed the decoders, while mine discussed more about what the
decoders want. Roberto and I have been brainstorming a little about this
in private email, but I look forward to seeing your draft in the near
future. I really want to get this new codec subsystem off the ground.
Thanks...
