my suggestion would be to use -ao sdl, and setup the appropriate
environment variables so that sdl writes its audio to a named pipe.
then run your favorite mp3 encoder and have it read input from the
same named pipe. i've never setup anything like this but it sounds
like it should be fairly straightforward.
