Well, to be honest, it's because I copied that from vo_png.
Could you elaborate some on the difference between the two methods?

Yes, of course. I wouldn't have submitted it otherwise. It uses libungif, which is
pretty standard on most distributions. libungif does not use LZW compression at all,
resulting in slightly larger (but free) GIF output. It is also API compatible (AFAIK)
with libgif, the gif library that /does/ use compression. Systems that don't have
libungif tend to have libgif, and some boxen (redhat for sure, any others?) have libgif
as a symlink to libungif. I don't know of any specific systems that use libgif over
libungif, but I assume you would find that one some old Unix systems. (I'll have to ask
some IRIX users I know...)
