yes i know all this, and also was thinking about branching, or its
simplified way: making -rc versions of releases, and continure development
in cvs, then backport bugfixes to the -rc and finally release.
something like the kernel development.
you can reach it with manual patching, branching, or duplicating cvs
repository (this is why the main tree is called 'main' not 'mplayer')
but
- the project is not so big yet
- we have only a few "full-time" developers
- no one has time nor interest to backport fixes :)

do you really believe that gui or config/playtree code cause the bugs we have???

anyway the project is already split to parts:
- libao2
- libvo
- libmpcodecs
- libmpdemux
- libmpdvdkit
- libavcodec (not even developed in mphq cvs, yet...)
- liba52
- libmpeg2
- input
- mplayer/mencoder core
