Why are you moving away from debconf rather than towards it?  I would
think, ideally, selection of vo, ao, framedrop, fs, and other settings
could be managed with debconf.  This seems like it's going to be able
to cope with more cases then trying to find a default of the config
files that deals with everything.

I'm not that familiar with ConfHelper or how ConfHelper could interact
with DebConf, so I can't really comment on that...
