Yeah, ftp would be more funny to be supported nativly in mplayer THAN smb.
This is because ftpfs support in kernel space is very uncommon and it's
quite unstable. Maybe you haven't got enough space on your harddisk to download
and you would like to watch the movie on-the-fly (well, in theory maybe you
can even seek by aborting ftp transfer and send other ftp command from a certain
byte position, though I guess it can be sloooooooow), while smbfs is very
common, since it's part of the official kernel.

OK, so the only goal is to make some user's life easier. Hmmm, why not,
probably I won't compile in smb support, but this can be the decision of
mine, others may require it. Please note that I did not say "it's stupid",
I was only interedted in your points to implement this feature and that's all.

Yes, it was only a wild idea of mine :) But here you are:
equinoxe:~$ apt-cache show smbwrapper
Package: smbwrapper
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: otherosfs
Installed-Size: 508
Maintainer: Eloy A. Paris <peloy at debian.org>
Source: samba
Version: 2.0.5a-4
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.1)
Description: A shared library that provides SMB client services
The Samba software suite is a collection of programs that
implements the SMB protocol for unix systems, allowing you to serve
files and printers to Windows, NT, OS/2 and DOS clients. This protocol
is sometimes also referred to as the LanManager or Netbios protocol.
.
This package contains prelodable shared library that provides SMB client
services for existing executables. Using this you can simulate a smb

filesystem.
Though maybe I should not suggest it since I've never tried it, only heard about
it ...
