I don't think it could be a problem. However I think "libmplayer" should
have some function (or whatever) to IDENTIFY parameters of a given multimedia
source (not only file ...). Then it can be used by other projects, _OR_
you can EASILY create a player by linking libmplayer and few other things
together which can play movies and such with libmplayer AND other contents
with some other library. I think it's simply does not worth to overhack
even G2 just for enabling MP3 playback as well ... If modularization in G2
can reach the requested level it won't be a problem to 'connect' external
.so object (or whatever with probably dlopen) to play other files.
Ok, I went to bed very late, so maybe I'm not too clear in this early morning
(at least it's early for just me, though).
