i can only agree to that :-) box sounds good, because the meaning of the 
word also somehow describes the content of the file at least somehow.

i find that the descriptive kind of names/file extensions always seem to be 
the best. same even if they are only the first letters or an abbreviation of 
a descriptive word.
well invented file extensions are, IMHO, for example .doc (everybody thinks 
of document), .mov (movie or moving something), .txt, .hlp, maybe .wav 
(waveform), etc. the only problem is, that there might not be a lot of them 
left.

Maybe .med (for media) would be nice, but it sounds somehow like 
medicine/medical too. Although on the other hand, this new format could also 
be described as medicine for problems/shortcomings of other file formats ;-)
Maybe there are other good names like this that I can't come up with right 
now.

mpl (for mplayer) is good too though. why not be proud of the fact that 
mplayer developers thought of it, and keep that in the name?

I'd say the name should be as simple and straight forward as possible. 
that's only me, though :-)
