I agree they're a bit hard to read...but it annoys me to no end when I
can't type man blah and find all the command line options available
for blah. Besides, if this info isn't in the man page, then what
should be there?

I think one of the long-term project goals is having a good
topic-oriented manual with source in a high-level format like docbook
(I forget which particular one the docs people prefer these days).
Perhaps a good start would be for someone to go through writing a new
introductory guide to using mplayer and all its features.
