That means that there is a bug in the alsa9 driver (I,ve noticet that
it chokes on my card as well: SB audigy reports maximum 2
channels). Does anyone support the alsa 9 driver? 

Have you enabled the correct alsa format conversion plugins?

In what way does it fail?

It also means that you only utilize 16 of the 24 bits that you've paid
for :(.
