cool.. i don't like writing long messages but i see myself forced to throw a few words into this OSD discussion...

1) OCR! -- i know there's a tool in TOOLS.. but why not include that into the main dev tree... it would be a FEATURE to capture ascii subtitles from subtitles encoded in the movie... don't give me "uahhh.. another library" thing.. another lib won't hurt anymore.. 

2) FESTIVAL!!!! -- that lib AFAIK isn't GPL but since MPlayer can play every format out there it should be able to play ("read") any text file too... or it should be able to put quote screens from pre-audio-movies via ocr (above) into words too... imagine THAT!

...imaging downloading an ascii file instead of a audiobook!!!! that would be a FEATURE too...

blablabla.. no patch either.. but i hope i've given you some inspiration.. even if my answer might be slightly off-topic (didn't bother to read your large text...)
