For whatever reason. Actually the configure script was generated by
autoconf way bay in time (at least it looks exactly like it was). The
point of autoconf is to ease system detection while this configure
script sort of complicates it.

I'm sure someone would do it if there'd be a consensus that it's the
right thing to do(rm).
