I'm not sure what kind of solution is ok to you. if you want a patch
that enables dynamic allocation for all systems, i'll send that. but
if you don't care about long paths as you said i can send a non-disruptive
patch that only enables dynamic allocation when PATH_MAX is undefined.

please tell me and i'll provide the patch for you.
