AFAICS chaining'd have the additional advantage that YUV _and_ RGB images 
could be overlayed in their natural colorspaces. Also, one application might 
want to "mark" stuff in the movie, i.e. operate on _frame coordinates_, thus 
benefitting from the scaling later in the chain, while another app might want 
to display a clock or sth. in _screen coordinates_, at the end of the chain.

So chaining would give you a lot of flexibility "for free" (from existing 
mplayer code), while in the hypothetic case that multiple apps want to use 
the overlay via multiple sockets/fifos the bmovl2 code would get MUCH more 
complicated AFAICS.
