I wrote that timer, and I haven't experienced what you describe. OTOH I 
haven't tried running MPlayer with the GTK+ GUI :) My computer is 
fairly slow, so could you send me a binary with GUI enabled? I ought to 
have most of the required dependencies installed.

Some time ago I rewrote the timer, but I never got around to sending it 
to this list. Please try this cleaner and simpler timer and see if it 
works better.
