I don't think using soundserver like esd/arts while control the volumn with 
pcm is a good idea. People use esd/arts to make it possible for there 
applications to share the soundcard, but if we change pcm volumn, all the 
application will be affected. I tried xmms's arts plugin before, and I'd 
rather stay with oss output:).
