Update: Its all working. :-) (Though the video is
quite jerky.) I recompiled the sources with the 3.2.3
toolchain. I think there might have been a problem
with my 3.3 toolchain installation. 

2 issues to note:
1. On performing a "make install" (i.e. install --s
...) on mplayer, the architecture is detected as
unknown. This was the reason that the stripped version
of mplayer for arm was not working. I manually
stripped it with the arm-linux-strip

2. mplayer rtsp://<remote-host-name>/media.mpg fails
with the error:

Failed to get a SDP description from URL
"rtsp://<remote-host-name>/neptune.mpg": Failed to
find network address for "<remote-host-name>"

Replacing the host-name with the ipaddress works
however.
